No More Miller Time

Updated: Nov 2, 2021

With the 2021 Broncos season profiling to be a disaster, new general manager George Paton sent the Denver star to Los Angeles before the trade deadline.

Miller will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2021 season, and since Denver picked up Miller's option in the off-season, they are paying him nine million for this season despite missing the entire 2020 campaign to injury. A questionable decision in light of the trade with the Rams, that sees Denver paying the majority of Miller's salary despite him not playing for Denver anymore.

So far this year Miller has recorded 19 solo tackles and 4.5 sacks in seven games. That makes him 23rd in sacks and...177th in tackles. Had to scroll a ways down to find him. He also hasn't been 100% healthy, dealing with lingering issues that eventually led to him missing week 8. His availability moving forward is clearly a concern.

Some will argue Miller should have been traded earlier, perhaps after the 2018 season where he recorded 14.5 sacks before the injury bug that hits all aging players set in the following year. Or even, traded in the off season before picking up his option.

Either way, Von Miller's epic career as a Denver Bronco is over, and he is undoubtedly one of (if not THE) greatest players ever drafted by the Broncos organization. The Rams receive a talented role-playing pass rusher to compliment their core, and Miller can still be effective in small doses yet doesn't have the durability to be an every-down linebacker at this point. He also was fairly exploited in the few coverage situations the Broncos put him in this season.

Miller, much like Demarcus Ware was for the Broncos, can be an integral part of the Rams playoff run, and the Broncos have a pair of second-day draft picks from Los Angeles in return for the linebacker. Broncos country wishes him the best of luck in LA.
